A Memoir Workshop for Fresh Starts and Messy Middles
When You're Not Sure How to Start or Move Forward in Your Memoir
You’re ready to write your memoir but you don’t know where to begin.
Or you’ve been writing for a long time and are now stuck in the messy middle.
You might have years of material or just a few pages.
You want to write (and finish!) this book, but you don't know how to move forward.
It can be tempting to think that we need to buckle down. Try harder.
Or that we need to take another workshop.
But what I’ve found in my 25 years of teaching is that focusing on the page level is NOT the same skill set we need to write a full-length memoir.
We need to think about our project in a completely different way.
When we can step away from the page -- and the sentence level details -- in order to crystallize the big picture, the path forward becomes much more clear.
And when we can support our minds, bodies and hearts as we’re writing, the process becomes much easier.
If this resonates, I invite you to join us:

The author of The Secret Life of Grief: A Memoir and 9 Steps to Heal Your Resentment and Reboot Your Marriage, Tanja is on the faculty of Lighthouse Writers Workshop and has taught creative writing and professional writing at the University of Colorado Denver, the Community College of Denver and Indiana University, where she earned her M.F.A.
Tanja’s memoir The Secret Life of Grief: A Memoir received the Nautilus Silver Book Award, an award honoring “books that inspire and connect our lives as individuals, communities, and global citizens.” She is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, Hemingway Fellowship, and a faculty award from CU Denver for her project “Writing as Healing.”
When we’re stuck, these three elements can make all the difference:
1. Architect from the 10,000 foot view.
Whether or not you write your way into a book, you'll eventually have to do the big picture structural work of ensuring you've created a cohesive (and compelling) book.
Some folks try to do this while working at the sentence level. But crystallizing the structure of your memoir is a completely different kind of work. And it's hard to do both at the same time.
I encourage folks to address structure sooner than later because it'll make the writing and editing process much easier.
2. Step into the reader's shoes.
When you're working with material from your life, it's hard to see the forest for the trees. Everything feels important! But we can't do your book justice is we try to cram in too much.
That's why it's important to step back and look at your materials through the eyes of your reader.
Once we can do that, discerning what to include (and how to shape those stories) becomes much easier.
3. Support your mind, body and heart as you write.
When we're working with tender material from our lives, it's easy to inadvertently shut ourselves down. Maybe we find ourselves procrastinating, or ready to giving up.
That’s why creating a safe container for our writing is so important.
Supporting our minds, bodies and souls will make the process much easier, as will creating a safe container for our writing.
"Thanks so much Tanja, for a truly fabulous, and powerfully helpful workshop!!!" --T.A.
"I think you created this directly for me. I’ve been vacillating on my book for months … sucking up all my energy. This helped me be brave and just decide already!" – Wendy K.
"I found your workshop very enlightening. It definitely clarified for me what the memoir genre involves & gave me steps to take so I can create my own & keep myself safe throughout the process."
"Thank you! I was so alone as a writer - the community and having a place to ask questions of other writers (not just friends and family) was so helpful. Your input and experience was so valuable. I'm so glad I found the course!"
"Thank you so much for this wonderful class! It has not only helped me shape my story and helped me to see in my mind’s eye how it will unfold, but it has really motivated me to get it written and out there. I really needed both the instruction and the motivational push to do it. Thank you!" –Sandi York.
"I wanted to tell you how much I loved this class! It’s been so helpful in so many ways… It helped me identify the themes, the arc and other elements that all story telling have in common but this story felt overwhelming before the class, now it feels manageable." –Celeste Donohue

I also appreciate her sensitive nature and ability to meet me where I am as I work through difficult material and trust my own self to bring my story to light." --Paige Doughty
"I am so grateful to work with Tanja ... She reignited a light in me that believes not only in achieving this project, but making it successful. Much gratitude for the brilliant support." —Patrice Bazile
